Anti-aging
products can be confusing. The range of creams, gels and serums out there can
be intimidating. If you are new to anti-aging skin care, industry-specific
words may be baffling from anti-wrinkle, rejuvenating to adding a healthy
glow…. But it is not all that complicated!
Anti-wrinkles
cream are predominantly moisturizer-based cosmeceutical skin care
products, specially formulated to improve the look of the skin by combatting,
reducing, masking or preventing the signs of aging.
As
we age, our skin needs change, it loses elasticity and becomes drier. Facial
movements such as smiles, squinting, stress and the environment all contribute
to creating fine lines and crow’s feet. This is further aggravated by sun
exposure, smoking and environmental pollution.
What works in your 20s may not be suitable in your 30s, 40s or beyond.
If the goal is to keep our skin looking healthy and youthful, at every age,
then we need to tailor our skin care regimen to our age.
Here
is my take on the way your skin can look the best it can be, at every age.
At
any age, skin will lose its elasticity as we age so a good moisturizer is a
must. The ingredients that are needed
will change over time. For instance, in your 20s, it is more about early
prevention and care. It is about applying sunscreen when out and about, even in
the city!
It
is also important to cleanse your skin with a gentle cleanser and remove
make-up before going to bed every night. You may still suffer from acne or
spot-prone skin so you may need a special regimen to tackle these. Including
salicylic acid in your skincare products will help to keep spots at bay and
keep your skin looking clear! Dependent on your skin type, you may start to use
a serum or a night cream to preserve your youthful looks. At this age, wrinkles
and bad skin are mostly due to lifestyle such as late night partying or smoking
or sunbathing without adequate sunscreen. Nonetheless, it is important to start
a good skincare regimen, for the future.
In
your 30s, you may start to encounter discoloration or first fine lines. It is
important to add an exfoliator. You also need to apply an eye cream in the
morning and at night to fight the first fine lines that appear in that area. A
good moisturizer with SPF and anti-aging properties is needed to add moisture
and combat first fine lines. Dependent on your skin concerns, a night cream may
now be necessary to repair your skin at night.
In
your 40s, fine lines and wrinkles are harder to tackle. You need to boost your
skincare. It becomes even more important to exfoliate several times a week to
remove dead skin cells, choose a gentle cleanser that will not strip out your
skin of its oils. You also need to apply a face serum in addition to an
age-specific moisturizer. An eye serum will be needed to help tackle crow’s
feet.
In
your 50s, overall, you’ll need to add moisture more than ever before along with
collagen-boosting ingredients like natural peptides. It is important to use
serums in addition to moisturizers and you should use both rather than select
to apply one instead of another like in your 40s. You will need anti-aging
skincare products, specially formulated to tackle sagging skin around the neck
and jaw line area, which is often neglected and also shows the signs of aging.
Other good quality ingredients to look out for are hyaluronic acid, vitamin C
and vitamin E, which are vital for healthy-looking, well hydrated skin.
Prevention,
maintenance and treatment are key to keep a healthy, beautiful-looking skin at
any age. You can never start too early and there is always time to start,
whatever your age!
